Artificial intelligence supports the development of modern libraries
Artificial intelligence is making its presence felt more and more clearly in various areas of life, including those where quick access to information, ease of use and services better tailored to users’ needs are key. This trend also extends to libraries, which are increasingly turning to solutions that support a modern, intuitive and more user-friendly service for readers.
User support right from the search stage
The answer to these needs is a new AI-powered e-service available in the PROLIB system and the INTEGRO multi-search engine. This solution helps library users to familiarise themselves more quickly with the content of bibliographic records, enabling them to better assess, right from the search stage, whether a particular publication meets their needs.
The e-service uses an LLM language model to automatically generate short, accessible descriptions of publications. Upon entering the dedicated tab in the record details, the user receives a concise summary that provides a simple overview of the document’s subject matter. This means they do not have to rely solely on the title, basic metadata or bibliographic description, but gain additional assistance in understanding the content of the material.
Artificial intelligence in libraries – faster assessment, more accurate selection
This is particularly important when a user is browsing through many records and wishes to quickly select those items that best match their interests, educational goals or research needs. Short AI-generated descriptions help users navigate the catalogue more efficiently, reduce the time needed for the initial selection of materials, and make it easier to find valuable content.
The new e-service therefore not only enhances the convenience of using the catalogue but also improves the overall user experience. Searching the collections becomes more intuitive, and the catalogue itself better meets the expectations of those who wish to quickly find the information they need and make informed choices about publications.
The solution is available in multiple languages
It is worth noting that the solution works in all languages available on INTEGRO. This means that it can support a wide range of users and is in line with the development of online services that are more accessible, flexible and tailored to modern ways of using library resources.
Greater functionality without placing an additional burden on the team
Another key advantage of the e-service is that it enhances the catalogue’s functionality without placing an additional burden on librarians. The automatic generation of short descriptions enhances the user experience without the library team having to prepare such content manually. This allows the library to develop its digital services effectively whilst maintaining a high level of catalogue usability.
The new AI e-service in PROLIB and INTEGRO is a practical step towards more modern library solutions. It demonstrates that artificial intelligence can be used not merely as a trendy add-on, but as a tool to support the day-to-day use of the catalogue and the discovery of collections.
