PROLIB Web Lending Library - a new dimension to reader services

Marta Bednarek

The PROLIB system’s Web Lending Library introduces new possibilities in the operation of libraries, offering advanced collection management tools that allow for comprehensive reader support, including, among other things, reserving and renewing loan periods or billing fees directly from a web browser. This not only streamlines the work of librarians, but also increases the comfort of users, who can be served off-site at the library.

Nowadays, libraries carry out a number of activities that meet the expectations of readers. These include various types of activities that take place outside the library premises – for example, outdoor meetings, festivals and picnics. Libraries promote their activities there, but often technological constraints mean that a potential reader has to go to the library to sign up anyway.

Thanks to the new version of the Lending Library module in the form of a web application, the user will also be able to be served outside the library. The modern solution in the PROLIB system opens up the possibility for even better service to readers.

Web-based solutions allow the application to be run on any device that has a web browser – this can be a laptop, tablet or smartphone; Internet access is also essential. Nowadays, meeting these two conditions is just a formality. Using a library system that is not tied to a workstation expands the possibilities for serving readers outside the library walls.

The librarian is given access to a multilingual application that complies with WCAG 2.1 standards, and it is not necessary to install any additional software on the device on which you want to work with the application. The PROLIB system’s Web Lending Library is a so-called PWA, or Progressive Web App. This term refers to applications that run just like regular websites, but their operation is the same as mobile and desktop applications. Librarians get their hands on an app whose interface has been designed based on the principles of usability and accessibility for the user. It is simple and intuitive to use, which will certainly translate into efficiency in working with readers.

The web application of the Lending Library module offers exactly the same possibilities as the graphical version (installed on a computer). Librarians do not lose any of the options that are essential for full reader support, but gain a system that is accessible on any device. From the Lending Web, all basic user support can be performed – starting with enrolling a new user in the database, through to loans, renewals and handling orders and reservations. When working with readers who want to pay their dues to the library – BLIK integration is at the librarian’s fingertips. Without payment terminals, anywhere, we can allow the reader to settle their account with the library. Cashless users will certainly appreciate such facilities.

The PROLIB system’s Web lending library benefits from the conveniences of modern web technologies. One such feature is the ability to scan a barcode / QR code using the device’s built-in camera. In this way, without the need for an external code reader, the librarian is able to uniquely identify both the reader and the item.

By minimising the number of devices needed to serve the reader – we are able to serve the reader at the same level as in the library premises. The speed of the application itself is also important. The realisation of time-consuming operations (e.g. the generation of a report with a large amount of data) takes place asynchronously, without blocking the operator’s current work. The librarian can access completed operations from notifications, which are generated individually for each employee and allow him or her to optimise his or her work.

By working in the web application, the librarian gains the possibility to work with the reader anywhere. The full availability to serve the reader, regardless of where the librarian meets, certainly has a positive impact on the perception of the library as a modern institution open to the needs of users. The use of new technologies is recognised by users, who expect libraries to be increasingly accessible and mobile. The PROLIB system’s Web lending service is certainly one such solution.
